Section 504 (Rehabilitation Act) Resources

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act is a federal civil rights law that helps ensure students with disabilities have equal access to learning and school activities. It requires schools to provide the accommodations and supports each child needs to fully participate and succeed in the classroom. Every student with an IEP automatically receives 504 protections—the “accommodations” section of the IEP is what fulfills these rights. Section 504 also protects students who may not qualify for special education but still need adjustments due to a medical, emotional, or physical condition. Understanding these protections helps families partner with schools to create inclusive, supportive learning environments. Below are Office for Civil Rights (OCR) guidance sheets that parents can use to better understand and advocate for their child’s rights under Section 504.
